JOSEPH... THE STORY CONCLUDES

Joseph was in prison in Egypt. He had done nothing to deserve being there. The man who could have spoken up for him had completely forgotten about Joseph. Two more years went by before something happened that would change Joseph’s future.

Some maths for you to do!
Joseph was 17 years old when he was sold by his brothers. He was 30 years old when he was finally released from prison. How many years had he been a slave and then a prisoner in Egypt?

So, how did Joseph get out of prison?
(NO, he didn’t use the Monopoly “get out of jail free’ card)
This is what happened...

The King of Egypt - also called the Pharaoh - had some dreams one night that worried him. The next morning he sent for his wise men and told them what he had dreamt. No one could tell him what his dreams meant.
That was when the wine steward remembered Joseph! He was the man who got his job back after Joseph told him the meaning of his dream in prison. He told the king about Joseph. Straight away, the king sent for Joseph. After having a shave and putting on clean clothes, Joseph went to meet the king.

The king said to him, “I have been told that you can interpret dreams.”
Joseph said to the king, “I cannot ….. but God can.”
So the king told him about his dreams. They were really weird dreams!
There were fat and skinny cows and fat and thin grains eating each other!
I’m sure that Joseph would have been praying to God as he listened to the king telling him about these dreams. And God must have put into Joseph’s mind the meaning of the dreams because he was able to tell the king what his dreams meant.
The good news was that for the next 7 years everything was going to go very well in Egypt. There would be plenty of food for everyone, much more than they needed. The bad news was that after that there would be 7 years of famine! Seven years!! Way longer than Elijah had to put up with!

Joseph even had a suggestion for the king about what to do about it. Someone could be put in charge of making sure that in the years of plenty, food would be stored for when the bad years came.
Who would be able to do this? Can you guess who ………… JOSEPH!

So Joseph put the plan into action. And when the bad years came, the people of Egypt had all the food they needed. But the famine wasn’t just in Egypt. Back in Canaan, Joseph’s family were struggling. They heard there was plenty of food in Egypt, so the brothers set off to buy food for their families.
When they arrived, Joseph knew who they were but they didn’t recognise him. He didn’t tell them who he was until they made a second trip to buy more food, this time bringing Benjamin with them. (You can read Genesis chapters 42 - 45 to find out about all the dramas!)

When Joseph finally told them who he was, they were very frightened! They thought that he would want to pay them back for how mean they had been to him. But this is not the way that God wants us to be. In Romans chapter 12 verse 17 it says, “If someone has done you wrong, do not repay him with a wrong …”
Joseph told his brothers that he believed it had been God’s plan that he should come to Egypt to save people’s lives!
The brothers went back home to get their father and their wives and children, so they could all live in Egypt. Jacob could hardly believe that Joseph was alive, and not just living in Egypt, but in charge of the whole country!

Wow, this is an amazing, true story!
