FAMOUS OT STORY
Hey kids! Thanks to Mrs Clarke, this week's story is about Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego OR
Shack, Rack & Benny "Shake a bed, make a bed, into the bed you go!"
These guys were taken as captives from Israel along with Daniel and others, by King Nebuchadnezzer (King Neb for short) to Babylon, where they ended up working for the king 'cos they were really smart.
Take the opportunity to act out the Old Testament story found in Daniel chapter 3 below :
YOU WILL NEED :
To act out the story...
THE STORY (FROM DANIEL CHAPTER 3)
King Neb got some people to make a huge statue.
He ordered all the important people to come to the statue dedication. This included Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.
When everyone was there, it was announced that when the music started EVERYONE had to bow down to King Neb's statue. If they didn't they would be thrown into the fiery furnace!
So when the music started, everyone EXCEPT Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, bowed down.
Someone told the king about it. King Neb was FURIOUSLY ANGRY!
He called for them and asked "Is it true that you refust to worship my god and bow down to the gold statue I have set up?"
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego said, "If the God we serve is able to save us, He will. But even if He doesn't, we won't bow down and worship your god or this statue."
King Neb lost his temper and ordered the fire to be made even hotter.
Then he ordered that they were thrown into the fire - so, that's what happened.
The strong men who threw them into the fire died straight away.
Just then, King Neb said, "Didn't we throw 3 men in the fire? I can see 4 men walking around and the 4th one looks like an angel."
King Neb called out, " Shadrach! Meschach! Abednego! Servants of the Supreme God - come out!"
So the 3 of them did (maybe the angel flew away - it doesn't tell us).
King Neb sniffed - they didn't even smell of fire! Wow! The king realised that God had all the power, not him.
So what can we learn from this story?
It's ALWAYS best to do what is right. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego knew that God would not be happy if they worshipped the statue (idol). Look up 1 Thessalonians chapter 2, verse 4.
What else? Talk about it with your family.
Some good questions that we can ask ourselves...
1. Do I have stuff in my life that takes up more time than it should... computer games, TV shows, sport...?
2. Am I ready to show that I am a follower of Jesus - even if it means that some people might not be happy with my good choices?
3. Do I pray and read the Bible, so I know what is right and what is wrong?
